Every now and then we get asked if boat registration and ownership information is publicly available in Arizona. These records are critical when conducting asset investigations or civil litigation investigations involving watercraft. The short answer is yes! And if you’re a public records nerd like us, more information can be found in ARS 5-324. Note that under section E4, private investigators are exempt from some of the same rules as a private citizen (much like the DPPA). Title 5 chapter 3 contains all kinds of information, rules, and regulations governing watercraft in Arizona.
Now, the big question is, how does a private investigator get the information? Contrary to popular belief, the Arizona Department of Transportation does NOT maintain the records. The records are maintained, and produced upon request, by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. If you are a private investigator, complete Form 430, and mail it to the address on the top of the form. The Department is very responsive and is always a pleasure to work with.
Understanding how to search for watercraft ownership and obtain the associated registration documents will greatly assist your investigations and provide your client with the critical information that they need.
