For the professional private investigator (PI), belonging to several associations is critical to one’s success. At a minimum, it is recommended that an investigator belong to at least three types of associations: state-wide PI association, international PI association, and an association that your clientele belong to.
I belong to the following associations.
- Arizona Association of License Private Investigators (AALPI)
- International Intelligence Network (INTELLENET)
- American Bar Association (ABA)
All of these associations provide networking, training, ability to brainstorm case strategy with other investigators, work opportunities, and increase my “reach” as an investigator.
Additionally, one should consider becoming a member of at least one networking group outside of the investigation world and consider joining their small business association. Circulation is king if you want to better yourself and meet people who can help you.
Here’s a real-world example of what this looks like.
Yesterday I was conducting an investigation to locate a defendant in a civil lawsuit. After much research, I learned that the individual had recently moved from a certain state in the upper northwest to Arizona. I needed to know what cars were registered to the individual in that other state, and I needed the information fast. I sent out a message through the INTELLENT listserv seeking MVD assistance in that other state. Within 10 minutes, I had an investigator send me the full MVD information from that state for the target. Once I had the vehicle information, I was able to quickly locate the defendant in Arizona.
Being a member of an international organization provided me with near instant access to a vetted investigator who was able to instantly provide critical intelligence. Associations are a true force multiplier.
Professional investigators cannot exist on their own desert island. Consider joining and participating in more associations as we approach 2025.
